Senate Committee on Aging, PHI to hold briefing on training standards for personal care aides




Personal care aides will get a high-powered focus Monday, when the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging and the Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute (PHI) host a briefing on training standards. “Training Personal Care Aides: The Latest Research Findings and Strategies from the States” takes place from 10-11:30 a.m. on Capitol Hill in Washington. PHI Director of Policy Research Dorie Seavey will present the latest findings from PHI's state-by-state analysis of PCA training requirements.


Also, Marcia Brand, deputy administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) will report on the Personal and Home Care Aide State Training (PHCAST) demonstration project currently underway to develop PCA training and credentialing programs.

An update on the six states awarded project funding (California, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, and North Carolina) will be given. Also, speakers from California, Iowa and North Carolina will deliver details on their programs. The projects are expected to lead to recommendations for national minimum standards, which currently don't exist.
