When good toilets go bad, the results can be explosive
It turns out many toilets currently in use may actually be ticking time bombs. Flushmate has recalled 2.3 million Flushmate III Pressure-Assist Flushing Systems. Faulty flushing mechanisms in the systems have caused toilets to explode. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Flushmate has received 304 reports of the product bursting, with 14 “impact or laceration injuries.” The mechanism was installed in toilets made by American Standard, Crane, Kohler, Eljer, Mansfield, St. Thomas and Gerber between 1997 and 2008. About 2.3 million units are affected by the recall nationwide. It is not known how many of the units are being used in long-term care facilities.
