Two new studies reveal that antipsychotic drug use in nursing homes remains high. In fact, one investigation found that such medications account for nearly 10% of all drugs prescribed in this setting. One reason is that they are often used off-label to treat residents with dementia. Another report concludes that seniors admitted to nursing homes with high rates of prescribing antipsychotics were more likely to get these drugs as well. If that's the case, this is one area where culture change may be long overdue.
