Mutka said that Vista Equity Partners emerged as the best candidate among numerous suitors from the private equity field. Vista Equity Partners' experience in purchasing and managing technology-based firms made it especially attractive to Silverchair, Mutka noted. Terms of the deal were not released.

Device may soon have providers breathing easier

Researchers are developing a breathalyzer that may soon be able to detect diabetes, lung cancer, viral infections and other maladies that often affect nursing home patients. Patients blow into a small valve attached to a box that is about half the size of a typical shoebox and weighs less than one pound. The device then seeks biomarkers for conditions and ailments. Funding for the project has been provided by the National Science Foundation.

Abbott Laboratories will pay $1.5 billion over allegations that it improperly promoted the anti-seizure drug Depakote for dementia care. The case includes a criminal fine and forfeiture of $700 million and civil settlements with the federal government and states totaling $800 million. Berkadia arranges $26 million in financing

Berkadia Commercial Mortgage recently arranged $26.1 million in financing for a portfolio of four senior housing properties across the state of Texas. Senior Vice President Lisa Lautner worked with lender Fannie Mae and borrower Capital Senior Living Corporation to secure 10-year, fixed-rate financing for the acquisition of the properties. The portfolio is made up of four Texas properties that offer independent living, assisted living and Alzheimer's services. The Obama administration has given long-term care providers an extra year to become compliant with a new set of disease diagnosis codes. Under a federal proposal, the rule for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition codes, known as ICD-10, would be delayed until Oct. 1, 2014. Provider concerns largely drove the government's decision to push back the new rule's implementations date. The proposal also requires health plans to adopt a unique health plan identifier for all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) transactions.

AFrame Digital receives tech grant

The National Institute on Aging has awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to AFrame Digital, the company announced. The more than $1 million grant will support a two-year study to evaluate the use of novel mobile technologies to improve remote health and wellness monitoring of seniors. In all, 90 adults, aged 65 years and older (including 60 with congestive heart failure) will be monitored for six months each. The average age of homeowners now considering reverse mortgages has plunged in recent years with the collapse of the housing market, according to a new report. One in five prospective borrowers of home equity conversion mortgages are between the ages of 62 and 64, according to a report released by MetLife and the National Council on Aging. The average age of consumers who have been through the required reverse mortgage counseling has dropped to 71.5 years old. Reverse mortgages — which allow consumers to draw on home equity without monthly mortgage payments and don't have income requirements — are touted by long-term care advocates as a private-pay means of paying for long-term care.
 

Alzheimer's care costs could top $200 billion this year

Direct care costs for treating Alzheimer's disease are estimated to be $200 billion in 2012, a new report reveals. Fully $140 will be paid through the Medicare and Medicaid programs. While 800,000 Alzheimer's sufferers live alone, most are being treated in a skilled nursing facility, assisted living, or by a family caregiver, according to "2012 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures" report from the Alzheimer's Association. Private insurance accounts for less than one-quarter of the costs, the report states. Currently, 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, and that number is expected to jump 30% by 2025, and triple by 2050.

Aricept and Namenda are typically used in the treatment of early-stage Alzheimer's disease. They might also be helpful as the disease progresses, according to British investigators. Researchers found that later use helped users better remember, understand and function. "As patients progress to more severe forms of Alzheimer's disease, clinicians are faced with a difficult decision as to whether to continue or not with dementia drugs and, until now, there has been little evidence to guide that decision," said Robert Howard, M.D., the study's lead researcher. By 2050, as many as 16 million Americans are expected to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

While doctors may prescribe drugs as they see fit, drug companies can market medications only for uses approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
