Peanut butter brand recalled after seniors sickened in Minnesota facility
The distributors of the peanut butter, King Nut Companies of Solon, Ohio, issued the recall Saturday for all King Nut and Parnell's Pride peanut butter—specifically, all jars of peanut butter with a lot code starting with the number "8." While the particular strain of salmonella found in the peanut butter is thought to be part of a larger, 42-state salmonella outbreak sweeping the country, the Minnesota Department of Health says the link has not been proven. Ten of Minnesota's cases were in nursing homes, and most of the other 20 were in schools or hospitals, the department said.
In a statement, King Nut Companies' President and CEO Martin Kanan said the company will do what it can to get the peanut butter out of distribution, and will work with the manufacturer to inform others of this problem.
"We are taking immediate and voluntary action because the health and safety of those who use our products is always our highest priority," Kanan said.
