National Nursing Home Week kicks off Sunday, with a wide array of activities expected under the 2011 theme “Fulfilling the Promise.” Nursing home employees and residents will be spotlighted in activities locally and regionally through the following Saturday. Many opening day events will involve community and family outreach in connection with Mother’s Day activities.

According NNWK’s sponsors at the American Health Care Association, “’Fulfilling the Promise’ means holistic care. This is seen when staff give comfort on difficult days, smile when sadness intrudes, hug when spirits sag, friendship to lighten a day, confidence when in doubt and companionship to counter fear and loneliness. “ Events taking place at various facilities across the country include special brunches, employee appreciation days, senior proms and beach days.

Activities often will encourage intergenerational connections and strengthen relationships with family members. They’ll also recognize staff members and volunteers for their contributions day-to-day basis. More details on the special week are available at www.nnhw.org or at its dedicated Facebook page.
