Ohio authorities have arrested the ex-husband of a nurse who was killed in the parking lot of her skilled nursing facility Wednesday morning.

Zeljka Sekulic, 37, was shot outside of Astoria Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Canton.

Police arrested her ex-husband, Dragan Sekulic, 38, on Wednesday afternoon, charging him with aggravated murder. He was being held on $5 million bond.

At the time of the shooting, Sekulic was out on bond for charges of felonious assault and domestic violence, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and an open container violation. He had rammed his ex-wife’s car into a pole near Astoria on Nov. 24, flipping the car upside down.

In a video press conference, Astoria co-owner Michael Slyk, choking up at times, said staff and residents were “heartbroken. We have lost a member of our family.”

There is no indication the murder appears links to the nursing home, but it was immediately locked down following reports of gunfire.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and those who were affected by this,” he said, describing Sekulic as “well-loved and dedicated.” While he did not cite her length of employment, she “was not a new employee.”

“Today it’s hard to find great staff. We lost someone very special today. It’s a tragedy and is a loss for everybody here, including all of our guests,” Slyk said.
