The majority of registered nurses believe that staffing levels on their units are inadequate and half say that the quality of care has declined over the last year, according to a report from the American Nurses Association.
More than 73% of the nurses who responded to the poll said that staff levels were insufficient. Nearly 60% knew someone who left their post because of concerns over unsafe staffing level. Only 51.8% said they would feel comfortable having a loved one receive care at their facility.
More than 10,000 registered nurses with varying levels of experience in a variety of fields responded to the survey at www.safestaffingsaveslives.org. The vast majority – 83.4% – worked in hospitals. Nursing home workers comprised the next largest cohort at 4.3%. The complete results of the poll can be viewed at
