An annual Gallup poll finds nurses are among the most respected American workers, based on their honesty and ethical standards.

Eighty percent of Americans say nurses have “very high” or “high” standards of honesty and ethics. At the other end of the spectrum, the poll showed  a 7% rating for members of Congress and 8% for car sellers. The 2014 poll results were released in December.

Nurses have topped the list each year since they were first included in 1999, with the exception of 2001, when firefighters were included in response to their work during and after the 9/11 attacks.

The American Association of Nurses is calling 2015 the Year of Ethics to highlight trust as an essential component of everyday nursing. The association also wants to reinforce the trust people have that nurses will protect patient health and advocate for their safety. More Americans are predicted to interact with nurses for preventative and wellness care, thanks to the Affordable Care Act.

Other medical professionals also remain trusted providers, according to the Gallup poll: Doctors and pharmacists tied for second place, each with a 65% “high” or “very high” rating for ethics.
