Time for a new policy?

Most operators stand to gain if private long-term care insurance becomes a significant source of eldercare funding. But a new study from Conning Research and Consulting indicates that such a scenario seems unlikely. Despite product innovation in recent years, individual and group sales have declined, according to Stephan Christiansen, director of research at Conning. "It may well be time for the [insurance] industry to rethink the entire product offering," he suggests.

VeraLight's Scout DS diabetes screening system does not require the patient to fast or provide a blood sample. The device is simple to use and weighs about 10 pounds. It works by detecting abnormal concentrations of advanced glycation end products. The product is awaiting federal approval and is expected to be on the market later this year, according to the manufacturer.

ZigBee will help staff interaction with residents, improve care plan design and aid managerial oversight, according to the firm. ZigBee technology is targeted at radio-frequency applications that require a low data rate, long battery life and secure networking.
 

Omnicare to repurchase own stock

Omnicare's board has authorized a plan to repurchase up to $100 million in the company's common stock. Purchases will be made periodically, depending on market conditions and other factors, the company said in a news release. The firm is the largest non-governmental provider of pharmacy and related services for the long-term care industry.
 

KCI gets LifeCell for $1.7 billion

Kinetic Concepts, Inc. announced that it will purchase LifeCell Corporation for $1.7 billion in cash. LifeCell makes tissue repair products for use in reconstructive, urogynecologic and orthopedic surgical procedures. The boards of directors of both companies have unanimously approved the transaction. LifeCell will operate as a new global biosurgery division within KCI.
 

Nursefinders acquires Resources On Call

Nursefinders announced that it has acquired Resources On Call, an independent allied staffing company. After the acquisition is completed, Nursefinders and its affiliates will have approximately $500 million in gross annual billings. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
