Weems: Competitive bids will cut costs

Kerry Weems, the acting administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said a new Medicare competitive bidding program for durable medical equipment might save the program and beneficiaries more than $1 billion next year. This year, the will operate in 10 of the largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas and will apply to 10 of the top durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies product categories. The program is scheduled to expand to 70 markets next year.

As the housing market continues its slide, a news report offers some encouraging news for operators: Seniors-housing stocks have the potential to rebound faster than the rest of the market, the Wall Street Journal recently reported. The paper points out that the national occupancy rate is still near 90%, and that declining house prices have not affected the pace of rate increases as much as some had predicted.
