"Technological innovation is key to improving advancements in the quality of life," said Sen. Herb Kohl (D-WI). "The technology here today will help seniors age in their own homes with dignity and lead longer, healthier, happier lives," he added. The Senate Special Committee on Aging, the Medical Technology Caucus and the Center for Aging Services Technology hosted the symposium.
 

Invacare rebounds

Invacare reported a dramatic turnaround in fourth-quarter earnings. The maker of wheelchairs and other healthcare products reported that net income for the latest fourth quarter reached $7 million, or 22 cents a share. In the year-ago period, Invacare lost $337.6 million.
 

CIT announces new fund

CIT Group recently announced the formation of 505 Capital Partners, LP. The new fund will invest in second lien, mezzanine and other subordinated debt instruments, according to company officials. When fully leveraged, it will have a target size of approximately $1 billion, they added.
 

Smoking drug may pose psychiatric risks

The Food and Drug Administration announced that the connection between Pfizer's anti-smoking drug Chantix and serious psychiatric problems is "increasingly likely." The agency said it received reports of more than three dozen suicides and more than 400 instances of suicidal behavior in connection with the medication.
