Just in time

August 26, 2008

Long-term care providers are enthusiastically backing legislation to increase the ranks of foreign-educated nurses. A House committee recently approved the Emergency Nursing Supply Relief Act (H.R. 5924). The legislation would set aside 20,000 employment-based visas per year during the next three years for foreign nurses and physical therapists. Proponents hope that an influx of foreign-educated nurses will help ease staffing pressures facing many nursing homes. Given the forecasts for future nursing shortages and increased service demands, the legislation couldn't come at a better time.
