Kama Chinen, the oldest person in the world, died Sunday at the age of 114 years, a little more than one week shy of her 115th birthday.

Chinen held the title of World’s Oldest Person for nearly nine full months after the death of American Gertrude Baines in September of 2009. She was born in Okinawa, Japan on May 10, 1895, but many other details of her life are unavailable. Chinen’s family closely guarded her privacy, according to an Associated Press report.

Eugene Blanchard, born Feb 16, 1896 on the French-owned island of Saint Barthélemy, is now the oldest living person in the world, according to the Gerontology Research Group.
