Woman who ran illegal assisted living facility sentenced to 24 years
A Maryland woman who authorities say ran an illegal “assisted living” facility out of her run-down apartment has been sentenced to 24 years in prison.
Zainab Kamara, 33, was found guilty of 29 charges including kidnapping, theft and neglect in April. Authorities say Kamara would visit shelters, hospitals and rehabilitation centers and tell elderly and disabled adults she could provide them with assisted living care at her apartment—which had no heat, very little food and was infested with cockroaches, according to the Washington Post.
A statement from the Prince George's County State Attorney's office said Kamara also took cash and credit cards from her residents. According to court documents, five adults were under Kamara's care at the time of her arrest.
Kamara is not a U.S. citizen, and could face deportation once her prison sentence is completed, according to the Washington Post.
