Nursing home residents taking a high daily dose of vitamin D experienced 72% fewer falls than residents taking a placebo, new study findings indicate.

Some study participants were given 800 International Unit doses per day, which is higher than is usually recommended or prescribed, researchers noted. The average age of the participants was 89 years old. A total of 124 people participated.

The study was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
