People with type 2 diabetes are more likely than non-diabetics to develop urinary tract infections, a British study recently found.

Using the General Practice Research Database, investigators compared medical records of 135,000 diabetic patients to records of non-diabetics. According to the study, the absolute incidence of UTI among patients with diabetes was 46.9 per 1,000 person-years, compared with 29.9 in patients without diabetes. Both groups were tracked for two years.

“Our results confirm that patients with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing UTIs across all age categories,” researchers concluded in a recent issue of the Journal of Diabetic Complications.
