Two healthcare union locals to merge in California
Two local units of a healthcare union in California plan to merge, resulting in the largest single union local in the state and the largest healthcare union outside of New York, officials said.Members of locals 250 and 399 of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) approved a merger. The new bargaining unit will be known as SEIU United Healthcare Workers West and will total more than 130,000 members. The merger will be effective January 1.
The merging locals represent a combination of hospital, nursing home and home care workers such as licensed vocational nurses, clerical workers, housekeepers, lab workers, technicians, respiratory therapists and other support staff, along with some registered nurses. In Southern California, however, another SEIU local represents nursing home and home care workers, according to an SEIU spokeswoman.
