The average cost of a private room in a nursing home in the United States rose 5.7% to $203 from $192 last year, according to a new survey.

Alaska, once again, had the highest daily rates of $531. The Shreveport area of Louisiana had the lowest rates at $115, the annual MetLife Market Survey of Nursing Home Care Costs reported. The cost of a home healthcare aide per hour also rose by 5.5%, the study found.

“The rise in these long-term care costs of 5% and more constitute a crisis for many people who have not made the necessary financial preparations,” said Sandra Timmermann, director of the MetLife Mature Market Institute.
