The Service Employees International Union plans to launch its new healthcare union today.

SEIU Healthcare, as it will be known, will serve about one million members, including about 160,000 nursing home workers. It will have an annual budget of about $100 million and combine financial and personnel resources from the 38 existing local SEIU healthcare unions. Dennis Rivera will chair the union.

Nursing homes can take actions to make themselves less vulnerable to unions, one labor attorney told McKnight's. These measures include training supervisory staff and assessing weaknesses in the organization, according to John E. Lyncheski of Cohen & Grigsby.
