The government and several industry groups are asking nursing homes to voluntarily focus their efforts on three quality and performance measures.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and several industry groups on Friday kicked off a participation drive for the Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes campaign. The program wants nursing homes to improve on three of eight measures they choose.

The measures in play are: reducing high-risk pressure ulcers; cutting use of physical restraints; improving pain management for short- and long-term residents; setting specific targets for quality improvement; assessing resident and family satisfaction; increasing staff retention; and making staff assignments more consistent. The program would track participants' progress but not publicly disclose individual providers' data.
