Acid oxidizing spray Nexodyn may be used to control the local bioburden of infected chronic lower leg wounds, and help wounds reset and restart the healing process, according to clinical data from its developer, Applied Pharma Research.

Elia Ricci, M.D., and colleagues presented the data at the 2015 European Wound Management Association Conference. The data was the result of a four-week-long analysis of nine patients whose infected chronic ulcers had shown unsatisfactory progress with traditional treatments.

Nexodyn was used to cleanse the patients’ wound bed once daily. During the four-week treatment period, the patients received no other active treatments.

After four weeks, the rate of local infection significantly decreased, with 75% of the patients showing no signs of local infection. In addition to infection rate, indicators of the wound bed quality and its microenvironment improved, and patients’ wound-associated pain also significantly decreased.

A separate study found that Nexodyn can be used to protect and heal post-surgical, non-infected diabetic foot lesions.
