Non-HIPAA compliance gets penalized starting today
Providers filing electronic Medicare claims that don't meet standards of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements are going to have to start waiting longer for payment starting today.
A HIPAA contingency plan that called for a July 1 deadline was allowed to slide until today. But now those not in compliance with electronic filing guidelines will be treated like paper-filers, and thus have to wait 13 extra days for payment action.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced the contingency plan in February. A listing of Medicare fiscal intermediaries for those need help can be found at cms.hhs.gov/contacts/incardir.asp.
