After four months, a 52-year-old transgender stroke victim has been admitted to a nursing home in Iowa. But it cost a hospital $142,000, according to local reports.

LeQuan Edwards stayed at Mercy Hospital Medical Center for 137 days, only two of which were covered by Medicaid, the Des Moines Register reported. Norwalk Rehabilitation Center finally agreed to take her, and Edwards moved in at the end of July. The center has staffers trained to work with the transgender population, the paper reported.

A May report indicated extremely few nursing homes in the state were willing to admit transgender residents. That problem is expected to grow nationally.
