While the economy may be picking up, independent living companies are still feeling the effects of lower occupancy. As a result, many are offering deals to potential residents, according to a news report.

Many communities are negotiating prices and offering move-in incentives to convince seniors to relocate to seniors communities, a new report in The Dallas Morning News found. Many seniors who would consider independent living are opting to wait until the recession improves before selling their homes.

Some communities are not imposing rent increases this year. Others are discounting rents. Those who want to move in but have not sold their homes may qualify for veterans benefits or for a loan to help them move in sooner, the newspaper said.
