Jeremy Spradlin, Wellington Healthcare

Leaders at Wellington Healthcare noticed that when residents needed a doctor, nurses were text messaging physicians to request a call. Security concerns prevented the long-term care staff from texting more detailed resident information.

That changed at three Wellington facilities in November with the implementation of the PointClickCare Secure Conversations system, says Wellington Vice President of IT and Plant Operations Jeremy Spradlin, MCP, NAC-CT.

Now, caregivers can easily send encrypted texts to doctors, says Spradlin. Secure Conversations works like the standard messaging on an iPhone, he explains. “Anyone who’s ever sent a text message can use this,” he says.

Younger staff “absolutely love” the new texting capabilities, according to Spradlin. Older nurses initially were hesitant but have embraced the system, he adds. One-on-one training takes only minutes, he says.

Secure text messaging

PointClickCare Secure Conversations allows caregivers to share protected health information via text message from mobile devices while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
