Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)

Voting along party lines, the U.S. House of Representatives passed Rep. Paul Ryan’s proposed fiscal year 2012 budget Friday.

The vote was 235-193, with four Republicans and all Democrats voting against it. Ryan’s budget includes $5.8 trillion in federal spending cuts over the next 10 years. The plan, which healthcare provider groups such as LeadingAge and the American Health Care Association do not support, would convert Medicare to a voucher program. As part of its Medicaid reform, the budget would change the entitlement program to block grants, allowing states to decide how to allocate Medicaid assistance. Opponents of the budget say this would have a harmful effect on nursing homes.

Prior to voting in favor of the Ryan plan, the House rejected an alternative plan that included even deeper spending cuts. The House-approved budget will now be kicked to the Democrat-controlled Senate where it would be considered “dead on arrival,” The Hill reports.
