Energy-absorbing hip protectors do not reduce hip fractures among nursing home residents, a new study suggests.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School in Boston found that the incidence rate of hip fractures on protected hips among study participants did not differ from the incidence rate on unprotected hips.

Investigators noted that nearly 340,000 hip fractures occur each year, and more than 90% of them are associated with falls. Investigators added that about half of all nursing home residents fall at least one time each year.
