The Department of Health and Human Services recently launched a new program called Healthy People 2020, a ten-year initiative to emphasize healthy living and disease prevention.

Preventing the spread of healthcare-associated infections—with a focus on bloodstream infections resulting from central lines, and MRSA—is a new topic. The initiative also is giving additional attention to issues such as adolescent health; genomics; dementias; lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender health; and global health.

The Healthy People initiative is “the nation’s roadmap and compass for better health, providing our society a vision for improving both the quantity and quality of life for all Americans,” according to HHS.
