Flooding prompts evacuation of nursing home residents

Nursing home residents in the rain-soaked states of the Northeast have been among those forced to evacuate as floodwaters rise this week.

While numerous nursing home residents have been displaced because of flooding, no deaths have been reported. The flooding has resulted from a monster storm stalled over much of New England, including Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire.

Meanwhile, federal officials recently suggested that in advance of the approaching hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana should consider evacuating thousands of nursing home residents from south Louisiana for the entire season. Gov. Kathleen Blanco and Joe Donchess, president of Louisiana Nursing Home Association, summarily rejected the idea, the latter dismissing the proposal as "insane."
