CMS alters interim rule on power wheelchairs
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has issued its final rule on payments for power wheelchairs and scooters. The rule offers slight changes to the interim version established in August 2005.Two new developments: The new rule allows doctors and treating physicians 45 days – not 30 days as mentioned in the interim rule – after the date of a face-to-face exam to provide the key parts of the medical record to the durable medical equipment supplier.
Also, Medicare will pay doctors and other practitioners an add-on payment for the work of compiling and sending the documentation to the equipment supplier. The rule was published in the Federal Register on Wednesday.
