Bill would toughen fire safety standards at facilities
Two Congressmen are proposing a bill that would require sprinklers in all nursing homes. The bill comes after a series in USA Today that decried what it called gross inadequacies in fire safety at facilities.
Reps. Pete King (R-NY) and John Larson (D-CT) are introducing the bill, which would also provide federal grants and low-interest loans to help pay installation costs.
Earlier this month, USA Today reported in a series that two-thirds of all nursing homes violate fire safety standards each year and are seldom penalized. It also reported that thousands of nursing homes operate without sprinklers and smoke detectors usually required in buildings used by the public. (Published on 10-25-05)
