Assisted living worker stole $20,000 by not registering residents, police charge
An employee at an Alabama assisted living facility stole about $21,000 by diverting checks from off-the-books residents, authorities charge.
Since being hired at Gordon Oaks Assisted Living in Mobile in December 2013, 43-year-old Ashley Fuqua allegedly allowed several people to move into the facility without officially registering them, according to local reports. When it came time for these residents to pay, she instructed them to leave the “pay to” line blank on their checks, saying she would stamp the name of the facility — but she instead wrote her own name, police say.
Fuqua was arrested Thursday and released on bond, and faces up to 20 years in jail if convicted, local Fox affiliate WALA reported.
Gordon Oaks had not responded to a phone call from McKnight's as of press time.
