The American College of Health Care Administrators will have the benefit of two "top" executives for a short period this summer as the association of long-term care leaders transitions between CEOs. Marianna Grachek will officially start July 17, three weeks before current president and CEO Susan Allen Burton officially departs.

Burton is leaving ACHCA to become the executive director of the Society for Technical Communications, the professional association for technical writers and Web usability experts within all industries. The Arlington, VA-based group, has 18,000 members around the world, a $3.5 million budget and a significant healthcare component. In addition to her healthcare background, Burton also has worked for a computer software and services trade association.

Burton predicted a successful transition between outgoing and incoming ACHCA leaders at the end of July. "It should be smooth and transparent," she said. ACHCA Board Chairman Larry Slatky praised her for bringing stability and much needed programs to the organization.

Grachek, currently the director of the long-term care program for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, also was a candidate for the ACHCA's top post last spring before Burton was hired, enabling ACHCA officials to quickly name a successor this year. Alexandria, VA-based ACHCA has 3,500 members in 42 chapters and a budget of $1.2 million.
