Private and semi-private nursing home room costs rose by an average of 3% this year, slightly higher than the rate of inflation.

The average expense of a private room in a nursing home in 2007 was $213 per day, or $77,745 annually, according to new data from the MetLife Mature Market Institute.

In 2006, the average cost of a private room was $206. Semi-private room prices edged up to $189 per day, from $183 per day.

Nursing home costs are the highest in Alaska at $510 daily and lowest in Baton Rouge, LA, at $123 per day, the report found.

Meanwhile, assisted living costs remain largely unchanged at $2,969 per month, or $35,628 yearly. More assisted living facilities are providing dementia care this year, the report found.
