The National Council on Aging has released a progress report on a national action plan to help identify gaps and opportunities in fall-prevention programs for seniors.

The 64 Falls Free Coalition members (comprising state agencies and other stakeholders) were interviewed over the last six months to learn about their contributions and activities related to “National Action Plan” strategies. The new report is an attempt to map those activities and strategies to assess impact, NCOA said. Some plans have progressed much faster than others, report authors note.

In 2004, nearly 15,000 people aged 65 or older died from injuries due to falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is estimated that 1 in 3 adults 65 years or older experience a fall each year.
