A Pennsylvania nurse has been accused of forging co-workers’ signatures more than 280 times to steal painkillers and sedatives to support her sister’s drug addiction.

Bonnie Duffy, 53, admitted in a confession to police last month that she stole medications from Carbondale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carbondale, PA, by forging 19 coworkers’ signatures in a medication logbook. The book was used to document drugs that were administered to patients at the facility. She also allegedly stole residents’ prescriptions from a medication cart, according to police.

The falsified entries were discovered when a nurse saw her signature next to a drug sign-out that she said she had not signed. According to the entry, the drugs were given to a resident who rarely asked for his pain medication. Administrators later discovered Duffy had signed for his medications in several other entries in the book. The thefts took place over 185 days, according to the center’s records.

A police investigation revealed that oxycodone, Vicodin, Xanax and morphine were among the drugs taken from the facility. Aside from occasionally taking painkillers herself for headaches, Duffy gave the stolen drugs to a relative, police said.

Duffy was indicted Thursday and released on $20,000 unsecured bail. She faces charges of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or misrepresentation, forgery, records tampering, theft, receiving stolen property and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this month, according to her attorney.
