Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) has introduced a bill to promote healthy workplaces.

The Healthy Workforce Act would provide a tax credit to businesses that offer wellness programs to their employees. The measure would offer a credit of up to $200 per employee for the first 200 employees and $100 per employee thereafter.

A qualified wellness program would have three of the following four elements: a health awareness and education component, a behavioral component, a supportive environment that may involve giving incentives to employees, and the establishment of an employee engagement committee.
