When an individåual develops symptoms of Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia, the disease affects everyone with whom that person interacts. And that’s just one reason Atria Senior Living launched a special edition of The Best Friends Book of Alzheimer’s Activities to all of its 63 facilities with memory care units.

The book was developed with Alzheimer’s expert and author David Troxel, who developed the “Best Friends” approach to Alzheimer’s care. Troxel’s approach focuses on offering personalized attention to dementia patients and encourages stimulating activities tailored to their unique abilities.

Noelle Martignette, life guidance director at Atria’s Marland Place community in Andover, MA, says she uses the book to train all employees who interact with memory care patients.

“We’ve been able to grow our activities program,” Martignette says.

Community and beyond
Martignette says Atria has made the Best Friends book available to people outside of its senior living communities who may encounter memory care patients, including fire and police departments, libraries, business owners and city workers.
