The House will be voting soon on a 2007 budget proposal that could exclude major cuts to Medicaid and Medicare.

Rep. Jim Nussle (R-IA) has crafted a budget proposal that excludes $36 billion in cuts over five years to Medicare, Medicaid and other social programs that President Bush called for in his budget, according to the Associated Press. The nursing home industry has said it is against such cuts.

The resolution would reduce funding for veterans healthcare after a one-year increase, and cut about $5 billion for education. If the House approves such a plan, it would follow the actions of the Senate, which excluded the president’s Medicare and Medicaid cuts from its budget resolution earlier this month.
