Faith-based organizations received $1.7 billion from the U.S. government in 2003, according to an Associated Press report.

Many of these groups have secular missions while others are more religious and spiritual in nature. In fact, some groups that do not even consider themselves faith-based were on a list of faith-based groups provided to the AP by the White House. Thousands of U.S. nursing homes and senior care facilities fall under the “faith-based” label.

The 2003 amount spent on faith-based organizations is about 8.1% of the $14.5 billion spent on social programs that qualify for faith-based grants. The list of 2003 grant recipients provided to the news organization is the first detailed tally of dollars for the faith-based initiative, the AP said.
