A nurse in Germany has admitted to killing 10 nursing home patients with lethal doses of sedatives and may have killed up to 40, according to Bavarian investigators.

The nurse said he wanted to “release” his victims – ages 60 to 89 — from further suffering in Sonthofen Hospital on the slopes of the Alps.

He confessed he began his killings in March 2003, according to authorities. Nurses on the ward allegedly became suspicious after realizing that drugs kept disappearing.

A German newspaper claims that the case is the most egregious mass murder ever committed in the country.
