The former office manager and bookkeeper of a Missouri skilled nursing facility was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday for forging checks and stealing nearly $2,000 from resident trust funds.

Shauna Voskamp, 29, stole $1,836 from five residents’ trust funds in 2012 when she worked at Lawrence County Manor in Mt. Vernon, MO. The thefts were discovered in 2014 following an investigation by the state’s Medicaid fraud control unit.

Voskamp stole the funds in a series of four checks made out to herself, which Lawrence County Manor’s administrator told authorities were either forged with her signature, or that Voskamp asked her to sign without the administrator knowing what they were for. The administrator, who was not identified by local reports, also said she would not have signed any checks made out to Voskamp unless purchased something for the facility and needed to be reimbursed, according to the Joplin Star.

One of the checks indicated the money was for wheelchair repairs for a resident, which had already been covered with funds withdrawn from that resident’s account. Voskamp also withdrew from two residents’ accounts months after they died.

Voskamp was sentenced in Vernon County Circuit Court to serve concurrent terms of five years each for charges of financial exploitation of an elderly person, violations involving healthcare payments and a forgery conviction not related to the events at the nursing home.
