The former business office manager of a Michigan nursing home has been charged with embezzling more than $460,000 from the resident trust fund, the state’s attorney general announced last Thursday.

Tina Marie Binkley, 44, was fired from the Boulevard Health Center in Rochester Hills in 2013 for failing to follow standard financial reporting procedures, according to Attorney General Bill Schuette’s office.

Boulevard Health residents sometimes would overpay for their expenses out-of-pocket while waiting for Medicaid or other insurance to kick in, according to charges from the AG’s office. Binkley would transfer the overpayments to the facility’s general account, then make cash withdrawals from that account for her personal expenses, Schuette contends.

“In this case, residents or their representatives were not advised of the switch to Medicaid or other insurance in a timely manner,” a press release from the AG’s office states.

Binkley was arrested Oct. 16 and was scheduled to be arraigned the next day. She faces 20 years in prison and a fine of three times the money involved, if convicted.

Boulevard Health Center is a 186-bed, for-profit facility, according to Nursing Home Compare. It had not returned a phone call from McKnight’s as of press time. Boulevard has cooperated with investigators and there are no “lingering concerns” about its books, according to Schuette’s office.
