Flu complications lead to 11 deaths at Canadian facility

Flu complications have led to the deaths of 11 residents of a nursing home in Cobourg, Canada, in the last two weeks. Flu outbreaks have been reported at long-term care facilities throughout the province of Ontario.

The outbreak began at the Golden Plough Lodge on Jan. 24, when nursing staff noticed residents having respiratory problems, according to the Toronto Star. The flu spread quickly, and more than 80 residents and staff members became ill. The average age of residents in the home is 87. Residents who died were in their 80s and 90s.

There are currently 81 Influenza A outbreaks in long-term care facilities and hospitals across the province, according to a spokesperson for the health ministry.

When the outbreak occurred at Golden Plough, control measures were put in place immediately. The nursing home ceased social programs, staff wore gowns and masks and visitors were urged to stay away.
