Nursing home residents who take antidepressants for dementia hold a significantly higher risk of falls and fractures than those using antipsychotics, new research finds.

Researchers examined Medicare records to compare the number of falls and fractures of patients receiving one of  the two medication types.

The analysis showed antidepressant users were more prone to fractures, carrying a 1.35 hazard ratio. Their risk of fall was also higher, with a 1.16 ratio.

The results were published on May 31 online in the Journals of Gerontology
