The recently ousted leaders of United Healthcare Workers West, an Oakland, CA-based Service Employees International Union local, have filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to allow workers to reject SEIU membership and join a newly created union.

The SEIU recently consolidated a number of California locals representing roughly 240,000 healthcare workers, including nursing home employees, across the state. Early last week, UHW officials were relieved of their duties. That prompted the local’s boss, Sal Rosselli, to form a new union, the National Union of Healthcare Workers, according to local news reports.

With his petition to the NLRB, Rosselli hopes to convince SEIU members to vote to decertify the massive union and join his new organization. Many independent and chain-owned nursing homes, along with a number of hospitals and other healthcare facilities are expected to take part in the vote.
