Four hospital patients died after contacting a deadly, drug-resistant fungus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in early November.

It was unclear if the fungus, Candida auris, would spread to long-term care. It is often seen in hospitalized patients. Symptoms, such as a burning sensation, mimic other yeast infections.

Thirteen cases had been identified in the U.S. as of press time, six of which were recently discovered and still under investigation. The cases included in the CDC’s report were identified in New York, Illinois, Maryland and New Jersey.
