Grilling is a favorite American pastime in the summer–but not for seniors, according to a new poll.

An average of 50% of Americans say they grill out at least a few times a month, with baby boomers leading the pack at 60%. But only 35% of seniors say they routinely enjoy outdoor cooking, says the recent Harris poll. Fully one in four seniors say that grilling isn’t for them.

That may be for the best, however. According to the American Geriatric Society, the summer months can be especially hazardous to seniors’ health because of the extreme heat. Seniors can keep safe over the summer by staying in the air-conditioned inside, drinking lots of water, wearing light clothes and avoiding extended periods in the sun, though the occasional barbeque never hurt anyone, the AGS suggests.
