Healthcare providers should reach the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services’ goal of having 30% of all Medicare payment be value-based by the end of this year, one CMS official shared Tuesday.

The goal to have 30% of Medicare payments be value-based by the end of 2016 was announced last year by Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell. The level was 20% when the goal was announced.

“We think we’ll reach that goal,” CMS Principal Deputy Administrator and Chief Medical Officer Patrick Conway, M.D., told attendees at an event held in Washington.

Burwell’s VBP push is unprecedented, making the most dramatic shift in Medicare’s history and the first time any presidential administration set a target for value-based payments, according to The Hill.

CMS aims to have half of all Medicare payments be value-linked by 2018.
